Megawide Construction Corp., the airport unit of GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corp. (GMCAC), will exhaust all legal remedies to prove its innocence and counter the alleged anti-dummy law violations.

“The case is now in court. With the help of our legal team, we can finally clear our names and disprove all the baseless allegations against us,” the group said in a statement over the weekend.

Last Friday, Megawide posted bail following the issuance by the Regional Trial Court of Lapu-Lapu City, Branch 68 of the warrants of arrest against the directors of GMCAC for alleged violation of the anti-dummy law.

Megawide said this is despite the timely filing of its omnibus motion that sought the dismissal of the case for lack of probable cause and due process, among others.

In October, the Department of Justice indicted top officials of GMCAC and former Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority general manager Steve Dicdican for allegedly violating the anti-dummy law, on account of its executives being not Filipino.

“We will not allow this case to distract us from our mission of providing first-world services and facilities to passengers of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA). We also assure the public that it is business as usual in the country’s award-winning airport terminals,” the company added.

Megawide said this is the latest development in a long line of attempts to bring down its reputation and credibility that began with its bid for the rehabilitation of Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

GMCAC transformed MCIA into the Philippines’ only internationally-acclaimed and award-winning airport, saying it has done so through a firm adherence with all applicable laws, rules and regulations, particularly as both firms are widely-held publicly-listed companies.

GMCAC took over the operation of MCIA in 2014 and started the operation of terminal 2 in 2018. – Myla Iglesias
