Maynilad Water Services Inc. has allotted almost P4 billion this year to reduce non-revenue water (NRW) in its franchise area, a 25 percent increase from its P3.2 billion capital expenditure for the said segment in 2021.
“We are accelerating our NRW management projects this year so that we can recover more water supply for distribution to customers, in preparation for El Niño,” said Randolph Estrellado, Maynilad chief operating officer, in a statement yesterday.
Estrellado said as a result of its intensified water loss reduction initiatives, Maynilad was able to recover around 47 million liters per day (MLD) of water in the first quarter of 2023, a volume enough to serve the supply requirements of some 241,000 individuals.
Maynilad added among the activities done to generate the recovery volume from January to March 2023 were the replacement of 31 kilometers of old pipelines and repair of 7,832 pipe leaks in Quezon City, Manila, Muntinlupa and Las Piñas as well as major leak repair along Osmeña Highway corner Zobel Roxas street in Makati City, which yielded a water recovery of 17 MLD.
