West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services has signed a deal with Manila Electric Company’s subsidiary, MPower, to deliver power to its Poblacion Water Treatment Plant in Muntinlupa City and 54 other water and wastewater facilities.
The parties said in a statement on Monday that under the agreement, Poblacion WTP, Maynilad’s newest water treatment facility, has been enrolled in the Retail Electricity Supply program, where MPower will provide an energy mix of 90 percent non-renewable and 10 percent renewable power.
RES allows customers with a minimum monthly power usage of 500 kilowatts (kW) to choose their own supplier and negotiate for the best rates.
MPower will also work with Maynilad to manage the plant’s energy use in preparation for a future increase in renewable share as part of the latter’s ongoing efforts to improve energy efficiency and transition to cleaner power sources.
In addition, 54 Maynilad facilities including pump stations, reservoirs, and wastewater treatment plants are also part of MPower’s Retail Aggregation Program, which enables the bulk purchase of electricity and consolidation of accounts for greater operational efficiency.
RAP allows loads from multiple end-users with consumption levels below the 500 kW threshold, located within the same franchise area and under certain conditions, to be aggregated to contract with their preferred supplier at their agreed purchase price.
“These initiatives form part of our broader strategy to optimize energy consumption while reducing our overall environmental footprint,” Ramoncito Fernandez, Maynilad president and chief executive officer, said.
The company is currently implementing a comprehensive strategy centered on the transition to renewable energy sources and the establishment of a carbon sink equivalent to 180,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide in order to be carbon neutral by 2037.
As of March 2025, Maynilad was aiming to increase its reliance on clean energy to 15 percent of total power requirements with a target range of 35 percent to 50 percent by 2037.
Maynilad serves the cities of Manila, Quezon City, Makati, Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon as well as the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus, and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario in Cavite Province.
