West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. will spend P1.8 billion this year to replace a total of 173 kilometers (km) of old and leaky pipes as to upgrade the distribution system and reduce water losses.
The company said as of end-March, pipe replacements completed were in Valenzuela, Caloocan, Quezon City and Las Pinas, among other locations including pipelines that needed to be realigned to give way for various government projects.
Maynilad said once completed, these projects will bring the total length of pipes replaced to 2,869 km or 72 percent of irs distribution system.
The concessionaire said the pipe replacement activities will also allow for the recovery of around 33 million liters per day (MLD) of water, enough to supply the needs of around 33,000 households.
“Our pipe installation activities have lately become more challenging because of quarantine-related mobility restrictions. Nevertheless, we persist in implementing these network upgrades, as it will help to reduce water losses and increase water pressure for our customers,” said Randolph Estrellado, Maynilad chief operations officer, in a statement. – Jed Macapagal
