Some 43,000 service connections of Maynilad Water Services Inc. may experience up to 13 hours of interruptions daily starting yesterday August 8.
Maynilad is replacing 14 ultrafiltration (UF) membranes of the Putatan WTP 2 to maintain “optimum filtration capacity” in preparation for the Amihan season when increased in the turbidity level of the raw water of Laguna Lake typically occur.
The company said the membranes are being replaced in batches to minimize the impact on customers of the resulting lower water production.
Maynilad said the activity will result in daily water service interruptions from 5 p.m. to 6 a.m. until November 2 in portions of Las Piñas City and Bacoor and Imus in Cavite.
Patrick Ty, Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System-Regulatory Office chief regulator, said the agency is investigating whether or not this activity is allowed under the revised concession agreement (RCA) with the government.
“We have already asked Maynilad to submit their explanation and we are evaluating whether or not their explanations are valid. If these are valid and part of regular maintenance, then it will fall under repairs… under the RCA,” Ty said.
In a separate statement, Maynilad said it recovered around 10 million liters per day (MLD) of water which was previously lost through an underground or non-surfacing leak that the company recently discovered gushing from a 900mm-diameter primary line along West Service Road near Sun Valley Drive in Parañaque City.
The company said the leak was found after Maynilad engineers conducted a series of pipe inspection and network audit activities in the area using state-of-the-art leak detection equipment and data analytics.
Maynilad said the eventual repair of the pipe also resulted into an average increase of 3 pounds per square inch (psi) in the water pressure of adjacent areas that improved service levels for more than 100,000 customers from seven subdivisions within Parañaque City, bringing their supply availability to 24 hours at 7 psi pressure.
