West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services Inc. has commissioned its Cupang Water Reclamation Facility in Muntinlupa City, which is now treating wastewater from barangays Alabang, Cupang, and Bayanan.
In a statement issued on Monday, the company stated that the facility has a capacity of 46 million liters per day. It supports Maynilad’s long-term strategy to expand sewerage coverage and protect local waterways by removing harmful pollutants from wastewater before safe discharge.
Maynilad added that the treatment plant complies with the stricter effluent standards set under Department Administrative Order (DAO) 2016-08, as amended by DAO 2021-19 of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. These regulations establish limits for key wastewater parameters to protect public health and the environment.
“We are not only expanding our wastewater treatment capacity—we’re also future-proofing our facilities to comply with the latest environmental standards,” Ramoncito Fernandez, Maynilad president and chief executive officer, said.
The company did not disclose the cost of the facility but noted that it is one of two major wastewater treatment plants recently completed in Muntinlupa, along with the nearby Tunasan WRF, which significantly increases the city’s sewerage treatment capacity.
Maynilad also assured that it has kept the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System informed throughout the development process. While DAO compliance was not part of the WRF’s original scope, it is now being integrated to ensure long-term regulatory alignment.
Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines in terms of customer base. It services the cities of Manila, Quezon City, Makati, Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas, and Malabon, as well as the cities of Cavite, Bacoor, and Imus, and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta, and Rosario in Cavite Province.
