The Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has turned over to the municipal government of Lingig in Surigao del Sur, a P40-million multi-species marine hatchery in line with the implementation of Republic Act 10787.

The newly completed multi-species hatchery will significantly improve the milkfish industry in Lingig, and has been a major step forward for the town’s aquaculture sector.Municipal Agriculture Officer Ricky Tubo said on Monday, September 1.

The facility was designed to produce up to 25 million milkfish fry annually, providing a vital resource for the town’s more than 2,000 registered fisherfolk, Tubo said.

A P12-million solar power system was also installed to supply 60 percent of the hatchery’s total electricity needs.

“Among the major impacts of the project is its support for our fisherfolk who are into milkfish production through fishponds and cages,” Tubo said.

He said sources of milkfish fry will become easily accessible with the start of the hatchery’s operations. (PNA)
