Construction of the three new bridges crossing Marikina River valued at P6.4 billion is set to start in second semester of 2022, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

In a statement, DPWH Secretary Roger Mercado said procurement of the civil works contractor for the three bridges under Metro Manila Bridges Project is targeted to be completed in the first half this year.

The bridges totaling 3,024 meters over the Marikina River include the 1,606-meter Marcos Highway-St. Mary Avenue Bridge worth P1.690 billion; the 691-meter Homeowners’ Drive-A. Bonifacio Bridge, P2.097 billion and; the 726- meter Kabayani Street-Matandang Balara Bridge, P2.641 billion.

Emil Sadain, DPWH undersecretary for Unified Project Management Office (UPMO) said the agency will ensure the proper and timely conduct of early procurement activities this year given the upcoming May 2022 national election which bans procurement activities coinciding with the 45-day campaign period between March 25 and May 8, 2022.

“We are pushing for the immediate review/checking and approval of the bidding documents to accelerate the procurement activity timelines,” Sadain added.

The draft bidding documents were prepared by DPWH UPMO Bridges Management Cluster in partnership with the detailed engineering design consultant Dasan Consultant Co., Ltd. in joint venture with Dongsung Engineering Co. Ltd. and Kunhwa Engineering & Consulting Co. Ltd. in association with DCCD Engineering Corp.

Last December, a loan agreement amounting P8.8 billion between the government of the Philippines and the Asian Development Bank was signed to ensure sufficient funding for the construction of the additional bridges which will provide alternate routes to decongest traffic and enhance transportation capacity of the Marikina River crossings.
