Manila Water Co. Inc. completed the major refurbishment of its Curayao reservoir in Rodriguez, Rizal which is expected to improve water supply in the region.
The company said in a statement the reservoir is ready for testing and commissioning.
Manila Water added the P16.9-billion rehabilitation of the reservoir which involved the installation of a new tank began earlier this year.
Once fully operational, the new reservoir will help ensure supply reliability and will maximize the system to provide up to 11 million liters of water per day for at least 21,699 households.
Julius Cruz, Manila Water construction manager for the project, said in a statement apart from ensuring that the reservoir adheres to water standards and regulations, the company also ensured the facility’s resilience.
“The main challenge for this project is the geotechnical test as we need(ed) to consider the soil stability to ensure that in the event of earthquake or calamities, the reservoir can handle the impact,” Cruz explained.
Manila Water said the Curayao reservoir had undergone several repairs until it was decommissioned from 2011 to 2018 but was ultimately revived in 2020 to help in resolving water supply problems in the area.
The company added that before the rehabilitation, the facility was running at only 75 percent to 80 percent capacity to lessen the impact of static pressure on the cracks and leaks.
The Curayao reservoir is one of the six reservoirs in Manila Water’s Marikina grid which has been serving as storage for water supply and for emergency response for Marikina and neighboring towns of San Mateo and Rodriguez. – Jed Macapagal
