The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is ramping up construction works on the P3.39-billion Binondo-Intramuros Bridge project to meet the target opening early this April.
Emil Sadain, DPWH undersecretary for Unified Project Management Office operations, said asphalt resurfacing has commenced on the ramps and main bridge deck as the contractor China Road and Bridge Corp. needs to get as much work done as possible to open the new bridge in the early week of April.
Sadain said the iconic design of the two-way, four-lane steel box tied-arch bridge (basket-handle type) has the makings of a future landmark in Manila — an outstanding engineering accomplishment that is about to be revered across the Philippines.
The project is anticipated to be among the most photographed bridges in Metro Manila when it opens, he added.
About 30,000 vehicles daily between the two busy districts of Intramuros and Binondo will benefit from this flagship infrastructure project of the Duterte administration, Sadain said.
This additional fix link to improve the road transport network capacity and efficiency in Metro Manila and alleviate traffic congestion is financed by a grant aid from the People’s Republic of China.
With its location over Pasig River and dedicated pathways for pedestrians, joggers and bikers, the bridge project is expected to attract the selfie-stick tourists who normally flood every square inch of scenic spots in Manila especially during sunset time, said Sadain.
To date, DPWH said, workers are doing the access ramps, installation of inner and outer guard rails and light post, repainting of steel components, and other miscellaneous activities.
