The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) placed the Luzon grid back under yellow alert again yesterday.

NGCP raised the alert level from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. as 16 power plant units and one more with de-rated capacities resulted in the unavailability of 1,406.8 megawatts (MW) in the region.

NGCP said that so far, from April 2024 to date, the Luzon grid was on red alert for a total of 5 times and under yellow alert for 15 times.

As for the Visayas grid for the similar period, it has been under red alert for five times and yellow alert for 10 times while the Mindanao grid was under yellow alert twice.

Yellow alerts are issued when the level of power reserve in the grid is low while red alerts are declared when actual power supply against demand is insufficient and power interruptions are imminent.

Available capacity in the Luzon grid yesterday was only at 15,167 MW compared to a peak demand of 13,714 MW.

Yellow alert in the Luzon Grid was lifted by 4:31 p.m. yesterday.

The Energy Regulatory Commission is expected to release this week the initial results of its investigation on six power plant generators for their recent unforced outages that led to the spate of power alerts.
