Kawasaki Motors has registered as a new ecozone enterprise at an information technology (IT) center in Cebu to explore the possibility of manufacturing motorcycles in an economic zone, Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) Director-General Tereso Panga said.

In an information sheet released on Sunday, PEZA said it registered Kawasaki Motors Development Center Cebu Inc. (KMDCI) as a new ecozone enterprise at Oakridge IT Center in Mandaue City, Cebu. Project cost is around P6 million, PEZA said.

The report said KMDCI will engage in activities ranging from software development and other inventory management system for motorcycle parts manufacturing to control inventory raw materials, forecast demand and schedule production planning.

Panga said this non-voice venture that will delve more on IT operation is the company’s “way of testing the waters before setting up a manufacturing facility.”

Kawasaki has been operating in the Philippines over the past 50 years, with a manufacturing facility situated in the village of Cupang, Muntinlupa City, the company website says.

Apart from motorcycles, the Kawasaki plant also manufactures and exports components and power products, as well as offers spare parts service and repair.

Along with its regional offices in Cebu and Davao, the Kawasaki network services over 2,000 stores and dealers nationwide.

Kawasaki has not provided sales data as of press time.
