JG Summit Corp. last month launched its Merbau solar project in Batangas City, considered as the biggest consumer-driven rooftop solar installation in the country.

The 13.811 megawatts roof-mounted solar power project will not only result in cost savings and a lower carbon footprint but also encourages the construction of more renewable resources consistent with the government’s policy on energy diversification and clean energy future,” said Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla, in a statement.

Merbau Corp., the RE arm of JG Summit Holdings Inc., completed installation of nine roof-mounted solar project on its integrated petrochemical complex which houses JG Summit Olefins Corp. and Universal Robina Corp.’s (URC) manufacturing plants.

The solar installation aims to reduce power consumption sourced from both in-house and from the national grid, as well as to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of the complex.

“Aside from our group, we are expanding our RE portfolio outside the Gokongwei Group as part of our solid commitment to delivering sustainable and innovative energy solutions to eligible end-users in our drive to contribute to a greener future,” said Patrick Henry Go, Merbau president.

Go added for projects within the Gokongwei Group, among companies that they are set to partner with include Cebu Pacific as well as Robinsons Land Corp. for its malls and industrial warehouses and with URC for its manufacturing plants and distribution channels.
