Globe Telecom Inc. continues to expand its fifth generation (5G) coverage in Visayas to meet the rising data traffic in the region.

Globe said it fired up over 300 5G capable cell sites in Visayasin line with the effort to double the rollout of more 5G cell sites this year to reach more cities and municipalities in different parts of the country.

Due to growing 5G availability, Globe logged 73 percent growth in 5G data traffic for the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2021.

In Visayas, Cebu City ranked first in 5G usage, followed by Lapu-Lapu City and Mandaue City.

“Many consumers are becoming interested in 5G because of the benefits that it brings in terms of stronger and faster connections, higher capacity for traffic, and lower latency. We are excited to see more people in the Visayas enjoying the technology through Globe’s wider and reliable 5G network,” said Darius Delgado, head of Globe’s consumer mobile business.

As of end June this year, Globe has logged 2.7 million 5G devices.

5G is the latest wireless technology. Its data signals travel through frequencies across low-, mid-and high-band spectrums, allowing huge speed increases and support for massive data transfers.

This provides 5G users with higher-quality streaming, clearer video calls, more intelligent homes and offices, and next-level gaming, among others.

Globe has allocated P89 billion for its capital expenditures this year including the expansion of its 5G services.

In a related development, Globe said it is ready to work with the government in “greening” the economy as the Philippines treads the path of recovery towards a new and better normal.

Through pioneering innovations, collaboration and sharing of best practices, the Globe Group’s united stance towards a more sustainable way of doing business is well aligned with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s call for private sector support towards a green economy.

“Globe has been at the forefront of integrating sustainable practices in our operations. We are in full support of the government’s call to steer the country towards a green economy, and we are ready to share our best practices and industry-leading systems and innovations to see this to fruition on a national scale,” said YolyCrisanto, Globe Group chief sustainability and corporate communications officer.

The company started greening its network in 2012 as it recognized the need to manage the environmental impact of its business

Globe has deployed over 8,500 green network solutions such as fuel cell systems, direct current hybrid generators, free cooling systemsand lithium-ion batteries to achieve energy and resource efficiency in its cell sites. These solutions use cleaner fuel with lower emissions, consume less diesel fueland provide energy-efficient heat removal.
