The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines assured the full 450 megawatts (MW) capacity of the Mindanao-Visayas interconnection project (MVIP) will be completed within the year.
“Right now, transfer capacity is at 122.5 MW, we’re hoping to double that before the end of the month to 225 MW. We’re hoping to bring that up to 225 MW by the end of the month and by third quarter it will be full capacity,” said Cynthia Alabanza, NGCP spokesperson, at the Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum yesterday.
“There are challenges in certain areas, mostly on the Cebu side as Mindanao is almost completed… So, we’re very confident that the full 450 MW will be completed this year. We will make sure it will be completed by third quarter,” Alabanza added.
The MVIP is comprised of a 184 circuit-kilometer (ckm) high-voltage direct current submarine transmission line connecting the power grids of Mindanao and Visayas with a full transfer capacity of 450 MW expandable to as much as 900 MW.
The project also includes converter stations in both regions and more than 500ckm of overhead lines to facilitate the flow of electricity.
NGCP said before the project is expected to improve power stability and reliability across the country and lessen instances of power interruptions while also promoting energy resource sharing as excess power generated can now be transmitted to the regions.
