The Luzon Grid was placed under yellow alert from 5 to 7 p.m. yesterday due to increased power demand and the unavailability of several power plants.
Yellow alerts are issued when the level of power reserve in the grid is low and power interruptions are not yet imminent.
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) in a statement on Wednesday power demand increased from the morning forecast of 11,325 megawatts (MW) to the afternoon forecast of 11,829 MW.
This is the first time NGCP raised a yellow alert status in the grid this year as available capacity for the period is at 12,488 MW while projected peak demand stood at 11,829 MW.
NGCP added eight power plants have been on forced outage since February and four other power plants are out since 2024. Sixteen power plants are running on de-rated capacities. These brought to 3,362 MW the total unavailable power to the grid. The plants were not identified.
Power situation in the Visayas and Mindanao were normal.
The Department of Energy was not available for comment as of press time.
