Globe Telecom Inc. tapped First Gen Corp. to provide a steady stream of renewable energy (RE) to power two of its data centers.

First Gen said in a statement yesterday this latest supply contract with Globe marks the fourth year of partnership between the two.

Under the new supply contract, First Gen will provide renewable energy for a key network facility of Globe and a data center under subsidiary ST Telemedia Global Data Centres Philippines.

The power supply for the two Globe network facilities will be sourced from the Tongonan geothermal power plant in Leyte, operated by First Gen subsidiary Energy Development Corp.

First Gen provides RE supply to three Globe facilities.

The partnership between First Gen and Globe started in 2020 with the latter’s data center in Tarlac.

Globe has been ramping-up its use of RE and shifting to energy-efficient solutions to reduce its carbon footprint while ensuring network resilience and reliability.

“As the first publicly-listed company in the Philippines to have approved near and long-term science-based emissions reduction targets by the Science Based Targets initiative, this partnership fuels us in our pursuit of our net zero ambitions by greening the network and partnering with sustainability-driven companies,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe chief sustainability and corporate communications officer, in a statement.

Globe aims to expand its use of energy-efficient solutions to decrease its baseline power consumption and reduce the carbon footprint of its cell sites, continuing its journey towards attaining Net Zero emissions by 2050.
