The Department of Transportation (DOTr), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Cebu local government yesterday inaugurated the P247.5-million project for the expansion and upgrade of bike lanes in Cebu City.

The project includes end-of-trip cycling facilities such as bicycle racks and repair stations that will form part of the active transport facilities to be constructed in major roads in Metro Cebu.

James Andres Melad, DOTr assistant secretary for road transport and infrastructure, said the agency is committed to building the future of the country’s urban transportation, anchored on sustainability.

“Our commitment to fostering a livable, green, and people-centric urban environment has driven us to invest in innovative solutions for a better future,” Melad said.

“The expansion of our active transport infrastructure is not merely about roads and lanes; it symbolizes our dedication to promoting healthier lifestyles, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing the overall quality of life for our residents,” he added.

The project consists of creating a total of 67.19 kilometers (both ways) of class 1, 2 and 3 bike lanes along selected roads in the cities of Cebu, Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue and the municipalities of Cordova and Talisay; maintenance and upgrading of a total of 124.69 km (both ways) of bike lanes; and the establishment of end-of-trip cycling facilities with 138 bike racks and five bike repair stations installed in the metro’s 23 more locations. – Myla Iglesias
