THE Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has partnered with two groups in a bid to further improve policy-making processes in the power sector.
ERC and the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines (IIEE) have joined forces to improve policy development addressing emerging challenges in the energy sector and implement programs for capacity-building and sharing of knowledge among engineering professionals.
ERC said in a statement on Tuesday night a memorandum of agreement was signed with the IIEE on Monday.
ERC chair Monalisa Dimalanta said the IIEE was asked to assist in reviewing and revising both the Grid Code and the Distribution Code.
Meanwhile, the ERC and the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) agreed to align efforts and identify opportunities for collaboration to advance shared goals for a healthier business environment for the renewable energy (RE) sector.
Dimalanta met with ECCP representatives led by executive director Florian Gottein, along with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners partner Robert Helms.
ERC said the discussion with ECCP centered on measures to improve the share of RE in the country’s energy mix and promote sustainable and secure energy solutions in the Philippines.
Based on data from the Department of Energy, the total share of RE installed on-grid capacity, comprised of hydro, geothermal, wind, biomass and solar technologies, stood at 8,416 megawatts as of end-2023, equivalent to 29.7 percent of the country’s power supply mix. As a regulatory body, ERC’s primary function is to review applications in the power sector that involves pricing of electricity.
