THE Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has expanded the review on the recent spate of red and yellow alerts caused by shutdowns of several power plants.

Monalisa Dimalanta, ERC chairperson, told reporters in a message the regulatory body is now checking 29 power generation companies whose plants experienced problems from April to May this year.

Dimalanta said results of the review will be presented within the month.

“…The team decided to expand the investigation to get a more accurate picture,” Dimalanta said.

In April, ERC hinted the possibility of slapping penalties on power plant operators that went on outage which caused thin power reserve levels in the past weeks.

The ERC is mandated to review the performance of stakeholders concerned to ensure compliance with reporting requirements, maintenance and technical standards, as well as observance of allowable outage limitations.

The most recent power alert level raised by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines was on June 5 when the Luzon Grid was under yellow alert when available capacity was only at 14,254 megawatts (MW) compared to a peak demand of 13,535 MW.
