The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is set to begin the construction and rehabilitation of EDSA Busway stations in the second half of the year, as part of efforts to improve travel in Metro Manila, ahead of the planned privatization of the system by 2026.
In a press briefing Tuesday, Vince Dizon, newly appointed DOTr secretary, said the department will bid out the contract for the improvement of the existing stations in May, with construction expected to start in the second half of the year.
“By May, we can already start the bidding process for the construction and rehabilitation of the stations. Maybe we can award by June or July. And then construction can start the second half of the year,” Dizon said.
Dizon, who shared his experience riding the EDSA Carousel on Monday, emphasized the need to improve the system.
“Hopefully, by this time next year, around February, March next year, our stations in the busway are new,” he said.
Once the stations and infrastructure upgrades are completed, DOTr will proceed with its plan to privatize the busway’s operation and maintenance (O&M).
