Energy Development Corp. (EDC) is keen on further building up its portfolio after breaking ground yesterday of its 29- megawatts (MW) Palayan binary power plant in Albay worth P7 billion.
“Simultaneous to this, we are also constructing a power plant in Mindanao and after that, a few more plant projects that we intend to put up in the next two to three years,” said Marvin Bailon, EDC head of business development, trading and marketing.
The Albay expansion power plant is expected to be completed by December 2022 and will expand EDC’s existing 130 MW Bacon-Manito (Bacman) geothermal facility. The project was also awarded a subsidy from Japan with a joint credit mechanism as it is expected to reduce the country’s carbon emissions by around 72,200 tons each year.
EDC said the Palayan power plant will make use of the waste heat from the 110 MW Bacman-1 geothermal power plant to generate additional energy without the need for additional drilling.
Heat from brine, which is usually produced from the wet steam operations will be used to generate electricity by the new power plant before re-injecting back to the reservoir. – Jed Macapagal
