ECs partially restore power; Dante damage to crops at P82M

The National Electrification Administration (NEA) said majority of electric cooperatives (ECs) affected by Tropical Storm (TS) Dante are back to normal operations.

Based on the agency’s monitoring, provinces that are still undergoing power restoration activities are Batangas, Masbate and Biliran.

NEA said for the Batangas II Electric Cooperative, the towns of Cuenca and Tingloy are only partially restored as the towns of Cataingan, Placer, Pio V. Corpus, Palanas, Esperanza and Dimasalang under Masbate Electric Cooperative are still being repaired.

As for the Biliran Electric Cooperative, while electricity has been restored in all the municipalities under its franchise area, its line workers continue to restore power to remaining households impacted by TS Dante.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) said that as of June 4, a total of P2.31 billion worth of rice and corn have been saved due to early advisories issued prior to the entry of TS Dante.

The agency said a total area of 20,134 hectares of rice have been harvested from Ilocos, Cagayan, Central Luzon, Calabarzon and Western Visayas with an equivalent production of 86,448 metric tons (MT) amounting to P1.59 billion.

As for corn, a total of 7,758 hectares have been harvested from Ilocos and Mimaropa with an equivalent production of 42,365 MT amounting to P720 million.

DA said that to date, actual damage and losses only amounted to P82.46 million that affected 2,132 farmers with volume of production loss at 3,060 MT and 2,949 hectares of agricultural areas in Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Bicol, Western Visayas, Davao, Soccsksargen and Caraga that affected rice, corn, high value crops and fisheries. – Jed Macapagal
