The Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) said it is poised to unveil programs addressing the challenges and opportunities in the future of work.

Sergio Ortiz-Luis Jr., ECOP president, in a statement yesterday said the group marks its 50th anniversary this year with the launch of the Employment Connect Opportunities Program, which is a digital portal for job fairs.

Ortiz-Luis said ECOP did not set any targets for this and other job generation efforts, but noted the group will focus on getting those who work in the informal sector or in the gig economy to be part of the formal sector to get access to government assistance and benefits.

Rolando Moya, director-general of ECOP, told Malaya Business Insight, in particular, the group advises workers in agriculture like farmers and fisherfolk to be part of cooperatives or organizations so they can be registered as formal workers.

Moya said ECOP advised small businesses — from barber shops to sari-sari stores — to register so their workers can be part of the formal economy.

The platform will also offer job opportunities for senior high school and college graduates.

Moya said ECOP sees jobs in manufacturing and services particularly information technology-business process management and tourism as the most in-demand jobs this year.

He said the portal will be launched before May 1, Labor Day.

Another initiative is a matching scheme between new graduates and prospective employers.

Moya said the scheme will incorporate training for soft and hard skills prior to employment.

Another initiative is the development of an artificial intelligence help desk where employers and employees can direct their complaints on labor issues, he added.

All these efforts, according to Moya, will be done in partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority and the private sector.

“ECOP will continue to advocate for balanced labor policies, the empowerment of employers, promotion of responsible business practices, and fostering harmonious labor-management relations,” Ortiz-Luis said in the statement.

Established in 1975, ECOP is the recognized voice of employers in the country.
