THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the construction of several road, bridge and river control projects in Luzon and Visayas.

These projects include a P96.5 million bridge in Abra, P96.4 million river control project in Iloilo, P26 million road project in Leyte and around P25 million road concreting in key areas of Oriental Mindoro.

In a statement, the DPWH said the project in Abra covers the repair and upgrading of the bridge that connects Barangays Bumagcat, Tayum and Mudii. It was completed three months ahead of schedule.

The old Don Mariano Marcos bridge requires retrofitting to meet current seismic load requirements of the structure and conform to the latest standard design guidelines, criteria and specifications of DPWH.

Meanwhile, communities near Jaro-Aganan River now benefit from a newly-completed flood control structure built by DPWH in Alimodian, Iloilo.

DPWH Region VI director Sanny Boy Oropel said the project in Barangay Bagumbayan is a 665-lineal meter revetment wall on steel sheet foundation built to reduce the risk of flooding by diverting, storing and releasing floodwaters in a controlled manner especially during inclement weather.

By limiting the amount of water rushing downstream, sedimentation and pollution in the river will be prevented, significantly reducing the risk of erosion of the riverbank.

The structure will also prevent the nearby Aganan Bridge from possible damage caused by raging waters, keeping the road open to the traveling public and facilitating unhampered transportation of goods and services in the area.

The DPWH has completed the rehabilitation and construction of two high-traffic roads in Pastrana and Jaro in Leyte, enhancing mobility and boosting local productivity.

In Pastrana, road works were completed in Barangay Socsocon, along sections of the Sta. Fe-Pastrana-Dagami Road, which cover the reblocking of 113.47 square meters of portland concrete cement pavement and application of 712 meters of asphalt overlay, DPWH said.

The project also involved the provision of thermoplastic pavement markings to ensure the safety of motorists, thereby improving road visibility at night and during heavy rainfall.

The DPWH also finished the construction of a flood mitigation structure and a concrete paved road, enhancing community resilience and transportation access, which has boosted economic productivity in Naujan and Calapan City in Oriental Mindoro.
