The construction of the new and expanded Siargao passenger terminal building will start this Friday, August 8, Department of Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said.

In a statement on Tuesday, Dizon said the expanded Siargao Airport project will increase its capacity from 200 to 750 passengers at any given time.

The start of the construction was scheduled for August 8, upon the orders of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., to improve the travel experience and ensure the comfort and safety of local and foreign tourists in one of the country’s tourism gems.

Dizon said the modernized and bigger Siargao Airport PTB will ease congestion in the gateway for the internationally popular tourist spot.

“Our tourists, both domestic and foreign, usually get in a pitiful situation, having a hard time, upon arriving at the airport, so the President instructed us to improve the experience of all tourists in Siargao because this tourist destination is essential,” Dizon said.

The Siargao Airport is part of the bundled unsolicited proposal for the modernization and expansion of the Davao and Bicol Airports submitted by the JG Summit and Filinvest Groups under a public-private partnership (PPP) deal.

Other regional airports lined up for bidding include the Laoag International, Tacloban, Bacolod, and Busuanga Airports. The DOTr is also considering bidding out the operation and maintenance of the Bicol International Airport during President Marcos’ term.
