The Department of Transportation (DOTr) yesterday launched the interim operation of the automated fare collection system (AFCS),a cashless payment,in modern public utility vehicles (PUVs).
This after the tripartite memorandum of agreement was signed by Land Bank of the Philippines, DOTr, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board and the Office of Transportation Cooperativeson September 1.
Jaime Bautista, DOTr secretary, said the AFCS will elevate the country’s transportation system to become at par with other countries.
“The institutionalization of the AFCS will bring us closer to the goal of achieving global standards in cashless payments when commuting, following the norm in many other countries that have long been using this system,” Bautista said in his message delivered byMark Steven Pastor, DOTrundersecretary for road transport and infrastructure, during the pilot production testing project for the AFCS Europay-Mastercard-Visa (EMV) at the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange.
