The Department of Transportation (DOTr), in partnership with SM Prime Holdings Inc., on Thursday opened the SM North EDSA state-of-the-art busway concourse, while the SM Megamall busway station is on track to begin operations later this year.

During the inauguration ceremony, DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon said construction of the busway concourse at SM Megamall will begin soon will be completed within the year.

Dizon assured that the EDSA Busway will continue to operate despite the major rehabilitation of EDSA scheduled this year in preparation for the Asean Summit 2026.

Located in front of SM North EDSA, the new busway concourse is a key interchange station on the Quezon City section of EDSA, connecting commuters to transportation options and commercial establishments.

DOTr said this also aligns with its goal to provide a comfortable, accessible, safe, sustainable and affordable transportation system. The new facility features well-lit and covered walkways, with ramps and elevators that ensure accessibility for all commuters, particularly senior citizens, pregnant women and persons with disabilities.

The EDSA Busway Project is a flagship initiative of the DOTr that is supported by the Department of Public Works and Highways and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority.

It aims to enhance mass transit efficiency, safety and accessibility along EDSA, Metro Manila’s main thoroughfare.

From June 2020 to November 30, 2024, the EDSA Busway has transported 326 million passengers, with a record high of 454,649 passengers on December 27, 2023 using 550 buses, compared to the 3,600 units of the defunct duo yellow bus lines.
