THE Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) has endorsed a policy that targets to address fake news, cyber scams and digital threats, with measures that include the creation of a multi-agency task force to respond swiftly to online falsehoods.
At the executive committee meeting of the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) yesterday, DICT Secretary and CICC chairman Henry Aguda backed the policy statement under the “Good Vibes sa Internet” initiatives aimed at building a safer, more trustworthy online environment by eliminating digital threats and protecting Filipinos from online abuse.
“We must create a safer and more responsible cyberspace for every Filipino,” said Aguda, who was appointed DICT chief last month and chaired the CICC executive committee meeting for the first time. “We can no longer stand idly by as false information erodes the trust that binds our nation.”
Task force vs online lies
The policy statement builds on the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 and introduces new measures such as the formation of a multi-agency task force to quickly act on online falsehoods.
Through “Digital Bayanihan,” the DICT will work closely with social media platforms, law enforcement, and civil society to detect and dismantle digital lies before they spread.
Beyond fake news, Aguda also addressed the escalating threat of cyberterrorism. As part of the ‘Good Vibes sa Internet’ policies, he said the CICC will issue a policy statement on cyberterrorism, advocating the reclassification of certain cybercrimes as acts of cyberterrorism.
This move aims to deter malicious actors, recognize cybercrimes as continuing offenses, and strengthen national security and public safety in today’s increasingly digital landscape.
Going after cybercriminals
“Cybercriminals must be held accountable with the full force of the law. We are taking a strong stance to ensure that the digital space is no place for fear, fraud, or extremism,” Aguda said.
These initiatives form part of the Philippine government’s broader commitment to shaping a digital space that fosters meaningful engagement, upholds truth, and safeguards the collective well-being of every Filipino online, he added.
