The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said three more solar-powered sewage treatment plants (STPs) in Metro Manila will be installed after unveiling the first one in Manila last month.
DENR Secretary Roy Cimatu said the three facilities will be constructed on major river systems that drain into Manila Bay including the Libertad outfall in Parañaque River, Tullahan-Tinajeros River and Las Piñas-Zapote River.
“The STP is a big step forward to making Manila Bay safe again for swimming, bathing, boating, fishing and other forms of contact recreation,” Cimatu said, adding that the facility is capable of treating 500,000 liters of wastewater per day.
The Manila Bay facility will ensure no untreated wastewater from drainage outfalls in Padre Faura, Remedios and Estero de San Antonio Abad will flow into the bay.
Cimatu said untreated water from the STP will be recycled and stored in an underground tank with a capacity of 2 million liters while the treated water will be used for watering plants on Roxas boulevard and the maintenance of two comfort rooms to be constructed at the bay walk area and for fire trucks of the cities of Manila and Pasay.
