The Department of Agriculture (DA) said P600 million in foreign grants is being readied for the country’s carabao industry and other DA programs.

Agriculture Secretary William Dar said through the United States Agricultural Trade Development and Assistance Act, the Philippine Carabao Center will have a share of P512 million from the P1.56-billion fund for intensified communitybased dairy enterprise development.

Dar said the government aims to accelerate herd build-up, increase productivity and profitability of carabao-based enterprises, ensure availability of safe and quality milk and meat products from genetically improved carabaos as well as tap the niche market for carabaoderived products.

Dar cited the need to modernize facilities, strengthen farm clustering, reduce cost of feeds, strengthen research for development and continue collaborations with local government units, among others.

DA said last year alone, the Philippine carabao industry’s output value hit P13.23 billion.

The DA will also partner with the Japan Agricultural Exchange Council (JAEC) to implement programs with a funding of P82 million.

DA said representatives of the two parties met on Monday.
