Camiguin Water Co. (CWC) is investing P400 million towards modernizing water facilities in the province of Camiguin in Northern Mindanao and avoid a possible supply gap in the tourist destination.

The investment forms part of Camiguin Water System Masterplan which covers projects like assessment and optimization, to expansion and sustainment.

The company said a significant portion of the investment covers the build and fix stage where infrastructure shall cover water treatment facilities, pump and reservoir construction at Cabuan, and a wide range of network line management including pipe-laying and meter replacements.

The island province have been challenged by water supply issues for several years particularly for those living within the remotest areas of the province.

“If we do not modernize the water system, the forecast is that a supply gap of 11 to 25 MLD (million liters per day) can possibly happen in the next 25 years. It can even come sooner because of climate change. There is a lot of uncertainty and we are sure that we also do not want a water shortage nor a water crisis to happen anytime in the future. The water assets needs to be replaced and rehabilitated now,” said Zenon Dimaranan, spokesperson for CWC.

Dimaranan said since tourism is one of the major economic drivers in the province, the modernization of the water system becomes imperative.
