Citicore Renewable Energy Corp. (CREC) broke ground for its 69 megawatts (MW) solar power plant project in Silay City, Negros Occidental.

The company said the project is its second solar facility in the province.

The project’s commercial operation is expected within the year as it is part of the second Green Energy Auction Program of the government, CREC added.

“We support Negros Occidental, its steps towards the renewable energy transition. With the completion of this project, we will not only be able to augment the power generation needs of Negros Occidental and the Visayas grid but also contribute to the growth of the province,” said Oliver Tan, CREC president and chief executive officer, in a statement.

CREC said the 69 MW project can also be expanded in the future for up to 100 MW.

The company’s first plant in Negros Occidental was commissioned in 2016 and has an installed capacity of 25 MW. Upon completion of the project, CREC’s facilities in the province will have a combined installed generation capacity of 94 MW.

The company aims to contribute approximately 1,000 MW of ready-to-build solar energy capacity per year for the next five years.
