The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) aims to  develop “functional cosmetics”   to make the local beauty industry more competitive in  product innovations in comparison to those in  South Korea, China, and Japan.

At the recent induction of the newly elected Board of Trustees of the Chamber of Cosmetics Industry of the Philippines (CCIP)  at the Discovery Suites Hotel in Ortigas City,  FDA director-general Samuel Zacate  emphasized the importance of innovation in  the  cosmetics industry.

Functional cosmetics can aid in whitening or tanning of the skin or  in lessening wrinkles  or protecting skin from ultraviolet rays among others.

Zacate said FDA wants to empower companies by making regulations more enabling, while still complying with Asean principles.

“It’s a challenge that the FDA wants to help tackle with the local cosmetics industry,” said Zacate.

FDA  champions the F-Pop Initiative in collaboration with Ministry of Food and Drug Safety Korea.

He also discussed plans for digitalization to maximize FDA’s e-portal in order to eventually migrate cosmetics and food registrations for automatic posting.
