Several groups have called for the cancellation of three planned coal-fired power projects in Quezon Province.

The groups are opposing two projects to be built by SMC Global Power Holdings and another by Meralco PowerGen Corp.’s Atimonan One Energy (A1E) with a total indicative capacity of 2,400 megawatts (MW) from coal.

Quezon Province currently hosts 2,195 MW or 21 percent of the 10,417 MW coal capacity of the country.

“(We) stand in solidarity with communities in Quezon Province in their bid to abandon coal and we commit to support this through all means available to us. No new coal project must stand in Filipinos’ way to clean and affordable energy for all,” said Gerry Arances, covenor of

Power for People Coalition (P4P) Arances said the use of coal power is declining globally due to its environmental and investment risks.

P4P and local community members filed last year at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources a petition stopping A1E for its alleged failure to adhere to environmental and community education requirements.

In a separate statement, the Diocese of Lucena urged government to stop the projects to prevent massive greenhouse gas emissions and instead put up sustainable sources.
