THE Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) on Tuesday said it has acquired a global aircraft tracking and surveillance system to enhance safety and operational efficiency.

This state-of-the-art system will significantly improve its ability to monitor and manage air traffic within the expansive Manila Flight Information Region (FIR), which spans approximately 3 million square kilometers, CAAP added.

CAAP has partnered with Aireon, the global leader in space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) for enhanced air traffic surveillance and aviation data analytics, which will provide real-time, global surveillance capabilities, addressing long-standing challenges in tracking aircraft over remote and oceanic areas.

The deployment of this technology is especially critical given the sharp rise in air traffic within the Manila FIR in recent years, CAAP said.

Capt. Manuel Antonio Tamayo, CAAP director general, noted the initiative as a transformative step forward, saying the integration of Aireon’s ADS-B system will enable the Philippines to uphold world-class safety standards while accommodating increasing regional air travel demand.

By adopting Aireon’s ADS-B, the Philippines joins other aviation leaders in the region, such as Hong Kong and India, in prioritizing safety, operational efficiency and environmental stewardship in their air traffic management strategies.

“Aireon’s space-based ADS-B data holds immense promise for improving efficiency, boosting safety, and supporting environmental sustainability. We are thrilled to partner with CAAP in achieving their ambitious safety goals,” said Peter Cabooter, Aireon executive vice president, customer affairs.
