Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Eli Remolona Jr. on Thursday thanked the New York-based Global Finance magazine for naming him among the world’s best central bank chiefs for the second consecutive year.
Remolona again earned an “A-” rating in Global Finance’s 2025 Central Banker Report Cards, which assess the performance of central bank governors from 100 economies worldwide.
“We thank Global Finance for recognizing the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ efforts in keeping prices stable, the financial system sound, and payments running smoothly. This recognition is really a credit to the entire BSP team and their commitment to our mandates,” Remolona said.
The report cards, published annually since 1994, grade central bank leaders from A+ to F based on inflation control, economic growth, currency stability, interest rate management and independence.
Besides Remolona, “A-” ratings also were granted to central bankers from Cambodia, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Ethiopia, the European Union, Guatemala, Mongolia, Serbia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan and Uganda.
Global Finance founder and editorial director Joseph Giarraputo said the report highlights leaders who deliver results “with independence, discipline, and strategic foresight.” The full list will appear in the magazine’s October print and digital editions.
Remolona, appointed BSP’s seventh governor in June 2023 to serve a six-year term until 2029, joins former BSP chiefs Amando Tetangco Jr. and the late Nestor Espenilla Jr. who were previously cited in the rankings.
A Stanford-trained economist, Remolona has extensive international experience in central banking, having served 14 years at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and 19 years at the Bank for International Settlements in Switzerland and Hong Kong.
Before his appointment, he was a member of the BSP Monetary Board and also taught at institutions including the Asia School of Business in Kuala Lumpur, Williams College, Columbia University, New York University, and the University of the Philippines.
