Education reforms to address learning crisis Business groups are pushing for immediate and long-term education reforms to address what they call is a learning crisis made more pronounced by the pandemic.

The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) yesterday convened the Education Task Force (ETF) to assess, review and evaluate the present state of education in the country and offer solutions to make the system more competitive.

This developed as advocacy group Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) joined the business community in supporting Congress’ plan to convene an Education Commission or EdCom contained in various resolutions pending in both Houses of Congress.

PCCI president Benedicto Yujuico said the ETF will come up with policy recommendations that would address the gaps and challenges in the country’s educational system, which have become pronounced with the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the challenges, gaps, and deficiencies of our educational system. Now is the best time that we sit down and seriously discuss these gaps and provide solutions that would make the system at par with other countries,” Yujuico said.

The ETF Policy Paper would describe the state of education and propose recommendations using the Quality Improvement framework in four areas: Philippine Qualification and Learning Outcomes, Curriculum and Instructions, Competencies of Teachers and Educational Leaders, and Institutional and Policy Reforms to serve the basis of analyses, explorations and discussions.

The ETF is composed of 12 experts in their respective fields.

PBEd in a statement said the group, alongwith PCCI, Employers Confederation of the Philippines, Financial Executive Institute of the Philippines, Information Technology and Business Process Association of the Philippines, Makati Business Club, Management Association of the Philippines and Philippine Business for Social Progress have expressed the urgency of addressing the learning crisis and convening a new EdCom is a critical response to the crisis.

Resolutions in Congress said EdCom is tasked to produce a set systemic and strategic long-term policy recommendations.
