The rehabilitation of the Berong nickel mine in Palawan is going ahead of schedule.

Tulsi Das Reyes, DMCI Mining president, told reporters in Makati City yesterday out of the P110 million allocated budget for the project, around P80 million has been spent on for the rehabilitation project that is supposed to span six years.

“We have four years left to complete it. I’m telling everybody (to) just do it properly even if we eat up the four years. MGB (Mines and Geosciences Bureau) told us they want to showcase it as a commendable final mine rehab plan. There’s no incentive for us to finish early, so let’s do right,” Reyes said.

The Berong mine opened in October 2006 and was fully depleted by December 2021.

DMCI Mining, through Berong Nickel Corp., has been conducting a final rehabilitation program in the area that covers 109 hectares of surface mine, 209 hectares of silt control structures and 25 hectares of stockpile area which started in June last year.

After rehabilitation, the disturbed areas could then be used for eco-tourism, agro-forestry and inland fish farming by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, local government units and host communities. – Jed Macapagal
