Close to 700 clients of Banco de Oro Unibank are now being processed for possible reimbursement after their accounts were affected by recent online fraudulent transactions.

In a statement, the lending giant said they have requested their clients “to go to their branch of account and submit documentation to get the refund.”

“The bank will shoulder the losses perpetuated by this cybercrime incident,” BDO said.

BDO, however, did not specify the amount lost during the hacking incident.

Since early last week, numerous clients posted they have received emails or text messages informing them that they have been debited as much as P50,000 from their BDO online accounts without their knowledge.

BDO said it has been working closely with the appropriate authorities and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) to prevent further occurrence.

BDO also said they have implemented additional security controls to block further attempts and continue to protect bank credentials as a surge of hacking complaints on social media emerged.

“We are aware of a sophisticated fraud technique which has affected some of our clients.

We have required our online banking users to update their passwords. Changing their password improves account security and prevents fraudsters from accessing their hard-earned money,” BDO said in a statement.
