The $1- billion 31 battery energy storage facilities ofSan Miguel Corp. (SMC) subsidiary SMC Global Power Holdings Corp. are nearing completion.
The facilities have a total rated capacity of 1,000 megawatts (MW).
“Our ongoing investment into battery energy storage facilities will greatly benefit power consumers all over the country because this will mean that even faraway provinces or areas can have the same stable and good quality power supply as everywhere else,” said Ramon Ang, SMC president
Ang said in a statement the battery storage investment will result in “better and more equal opportunities for industrialization and economic growth” as it can reduce imbalances in the grid that cause power interruptions.
The project is also envisioned to transform areas previously unattractive for investments because of unstable or poor power supply.
Ang said the technology is capable of removing excess power to be injected at other strategic areas within the grid within millisecond level to maintain quality power level and become a solution for renewable power sources with intermittent fuel supply.
SMC said some of its battery energy storage facilities are in the advanced stages of completion.
Among the sites are Pangasinan, Bataan, Cebu and Davao.
In 2018, SMC completed its first battery energy storage facility in Masinloc, Zambales. – Jed Macapagal
