Technology firm Amber Kinetics Inc. is set to complete the expansion of its battery energy storage manufacturing plant in Batangas by the end of the year to address expected boom in renewable energy demand in the country.

The company manufactures flywheel energy storage systems capable of a four-hour discharge without degradation in performance and with a 30-year design life ideal for renewable but intermittent power sources.

Roberto Kanapi, Amber Kinetics director of business development for Philippines, said in an online briefing yesterday the facility is capable of producing 600 to 700 flywheels per year and can be doubled to around 1,800 to 2,000 flywheels annually after the expansion.

Kanapi added Amber Kinetics eyes to supply local and global requirements with the current energy storage technology costs at $600 to $700 per kilowatt hour due to rising prices of lithium ion batteries.

Markets being eyed are Japan and Australia.

Amber Kinetics last year partnered with the Manila Electric Co. to test the feasibility of the flywheel energy storage systems at the latter’s research and development facility in Pasig City.

The company eyes to tap International Container Terminal Services Inc., San Miguel and Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. (PSPC).

Kanapi said PSPC wants a service station in Angeles, Pampanga to be fully self-reliant by using solar panels and energy storage facilities.

Kanapi said Amber Kinetics is also in talks with biomass power plant operators in Isabela and Negros.
