Local renewable energy developer Alternergy Holdings Corp. awarded China Energy Engineering Group Guangdong Electric Power Design Institute Co. Ltd. (GEDI) and its local subsidiary, GEDI Construction Development Corp., the balance of plant (BOP) engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for its 163 megawatts (MW) worth of wind power projects.

The company said the BOP EPC contract awarded yesterday entails the design, engineering, supply of civil and electrical works, transport of equipment, construction and installation of wind farms in Alabat, Quezon and in Tanay, Rizal.

Both wind projects are expected to be ready for operation by the end of 2025.

“A very extensive and meticulous tender process was conducted for the BOP EPC contracts for the Alabat and Tanay Wind Projects. A great deal of consideration was taken to ensure that there will be synergies with both our supplier and contractor given our commitment and timeline under the Green Energy Auction 2 award,” said Knud Hedeager, Alternergy Wind Holdings Corp. president, in a statement.

GEDI currently has presence in more than 50 countries with more than 700 EPC projects worldwide, including Southeast Asia, South Asia, Middle East, Easter Europe and Africa.

In China, GEDI is engaged as an EPC contractor for various wind projects with total capacity of more than 7,500 MW, of which 6,000 MW are offshore wind power projects, and another two onshore wind power projects in Vietnam with a combined capacity of 300 MW.

In the Philippines, GEDI is also an accredited contractor of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines for various transmission projects, lines and substations.

Last year, Alternergy said it plans to build up to 350 MW of power projects in three to five years: 33 MW for solar, 220 MW for onshore wind and 50 MW for run-of-river hydro projects.

Recently, Alternergy also completed preliminary studies and initial assessment on the technical feasibility of offshore wind energy service contracts with Shell Overseas Investment B.V. to pursue offshore wind projects in the Philippines.

The studies bared that three of four sites showed positive indications and may be further pursued.
