Alsons pushes for more RE projects

Alsons Consolidated Resources Inc. through its energy arm, Alsons Power Group, is keen on further growing its renewable energy (RE) portfolio and expanding outside Mindanao this year.

The company said in a statement on Thursday it is set to construct the 37.8 megawatts (MW) Sindangan-Zambo river power plant in Zamboanga del Norte and the 53 MW Bago hydro power plant in Negros Occidental.

Alsons said it is also set to launch its first large-scale solar power project in Mindanao within the first half of the year. However, the company has not yet disclosed the target capacity and location of the said project.

“Our mission is clear, to continuously provide safe, reliable and affordable electricity while creating lasting value for today and generations to come… With our collective strengths, I am

confident we can reach new milestones and overcome any hurdles along the way,” said Antonio Miguel Alcantara, Alsons Power chief executive officer.

Alsons said it is also bent on expanding outside the Mindanao region with the first phase of the 95.2 MW Bohol in-island diesel power station in the municipality of Ubay, nearing completion.

The company said this facility is designed to provide a reliable backup power source for consumers in Bohol to ensure continued electricity supply during times when the province is isolated from the Visayas grid due to calamities or natural disasters.

“This project will capitalize on opportunities in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market and Ancillary Reserve market over the next three to five years, until additional plants are developed to address demand-supply gaps in the region,” Alcantara added.

Last year, Alsons completed the 14.5 MW Siguil Hydro power plant in Maasim, Sarangani.

Apart from th e Sarangani hydro power plant, Alsons’ existing portfolio also include thermal and coal-fired power plants such as the 103 MW Mapalad Power Corp., the 55 MW Southern Philippines Power Corp., the 100 MW Western Mindanao Power Corp. and the 210 MW Sarangani Energy Corp. for close to 500 MW of capacity all located in Mindanao.
