TOKYO. – A Japanese company is offering its services for the wider use of artificial intelligence in the Philippine energy sector.

Patrick Aquino, DOE director of the Energy Utilization Management Bureau, told reporters in a briefing here SUStech Inc. is offering a technology that can help predict power plant issues thereby avoiding unexpected shutdowns.

Aquino said the system can also trace causes of power disruptions.

“That Japanese firm now has at least 21 patents. It can process data, whether its on outages; or making sure that transmission size is correct; or even energy storage but it requires historical data and the system has to run for at least two weeks… It is also proprietary and can also flag violations,” Aquino said.

Aquino said SUStech’s system is 92 to 94 percent accurate in its projections.

But he said employing such service will have a cost and thus subscription by power generation companies is purely optional.

DOE undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella said in the same briefing the agency must study the implications of using the system on the electric bills of consumers.

The DOE will present SUStech’s proposal to Secretary Raphael Lotilla and to Energy Regulatory Commission chairperson Monalisa Dimalanta as it can help resolve problems in the local energy sector.
