AC Energy and partner The Blue Circle have signed a notice to proceed (NTP) with General Electric Renewable Energy (GE Renewable Energy) to utilize its new platform wind turbines for another 40 megawatts (MW) project in Binh Thuan, Vietnam.
The company said eight of GE Renewable Energy’s Cypress platform turbines with a capacity of 5 MW each will be utilized for the project.
The Bin Thuan project is set to be equipped with the largest rotor diameter for an onshore project in Asia and will be the first to transport blades in two pieces before assembly on site.
“This technology is a game-changer for onshore sites as it will allow larger capacity machines, lowering our cost of energy and enhancing competitiveness of wind energy,” said Hervé Grillot, The Blue Circle chief construction officer.
This partnership of AC Energy, The Blue Circle and GE Renewable Energy is the second phase of the Mui Ne wind project which is capable to produce a total of 170 MW of electricity.
The first 40 MW phase of the project was in partnership with AC Energy, The Blue Circle which will utilize 10 4.2 MW wind turbines from Vestas.
Both phases are eyed to be completed to qualify under Vietnam’s feed-in-tariff deadline of November 2021 to benefit from a rate of 8.5 US cents per kilowatt hour for 20 years.
Based on equity interest in power generation businesses, the entire AC Energy Group already owns approximately 1.7 gigawatts (GW) of generation capacity in operations and under construction as it aspires to exceed 5 GW of attributable capacity and generate at least fifty percent of energy from renewables by 2025.
