Local power generation developer, Aboitiz Power Corp. is developing two solar projects in Ilocos Norte with a total capacity of 538.48 megawatts (MW), according to documents filed at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Environmental Management Bureau (EMB).

The Currimao and the Talingaan solar power projects will have total project costs of P34.5 billion, filings available in the EMB website, showed.

The bigger one will be the 351.436 MW project in Currimao, which will have a BESS capacity of 337.8 megawatt hours. It will be developed by Aboitiz Power through the Northern Sun Power Inc.

With an estimated cost of P18.6 billion, the project will occupy a total area of 244.0723hectares, said the company papers. The project site is 70-percent owned by the proponent while 30 percent will be leased, the company said.

On the other hand, the Talingaan solar project will have a solar capacity of 187.044 MWs and a BESS capacity of 276.954 MWh, the Aboitiz Power said.  It will be pursued by Aboitiz Power through the North Luzon Green Power Inc., the company papers showed.

This project will have an estimated project cost of P15.9 billion and occupy a total of 114.4391 hectares, with the project site 100 percent owned by the proponent.

Construction of both projects will start by the second quarter of 2027, with a target energization in the third quarter of 2028, for a start of commercial operation in the first quarter of 2029.

The allocated budgets include funds for the detailed engineering studies and designs; the acquisition of necessary government permits and licenses; site preparation and development; construction of the support facilities; installation of the solar power plant and BESS components; procurement of necessary equipment and materials; environmental management and protection, air pollution devices; and environmental monitoring activities.

The Aboitiz Power has set a capital expenditure budget of P78.1 billion for 2025.

Aboitiz Power, as an entire group, has a current growth strategy to add 3,600 MW of new renewable energy (RE) capacity to have a total of 4,600 MWs of RE by 2030. This will go with the company’s thermal power plants to support the country’s baseload and peak energy demands, and achieve a total portfolio of 9,200 MWs by 2030
