Aboitiz Power Corp. is building a geothermal binary plant in Tiwi, Albay to further grow its renewable energy (RE) portfolio.

The company said subsidiary, AP Renewables Inc. (APRI) is constructing the project that will utilize excess heat from spent brine at the Tiwi geothermal facility that can generate an additional 17 megawatts (MW) of energy.

The Tiwi binary plant will be built from the ground up with an entirely new binary plant system, pipes and transmission line touted for completion before the end of 2023. The facility will also work by utilizing residual heat from the hot brine of the main geothermal production process which is otherwise just discarded.

“This project is meant to recycle our by-product and turn it into productive energy in the form of electricity, through the addition of a binary plant. We are always keen on investing in improvements and technical innovations that extend the useful life and improve the output of our renewable energy assets,” said Jeffrey Estrella, APRI president and chief operating officer, in a statement.

As of April 2021, Aboitiz Power had the biggest share in installed generating capacity in the entire country at 4,973.4 MW equivalent to a share of 21.3 percent of the total 23,409.7 MW

Aboitiz Power also targets to double its capacity to 9,200 MW by 2030, wherein 4,600 MW are targeted for RE projects located both local and overseas. – Jed Macapagal
