Six airports are lined up for privatization under the public-private partnership (PPP) scheme and three more airports will be night rated this year, according to state-run Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).

Following the successful unsolicited bid for P4.5 billion for Bohol-Panglao International Airport and the P12.75-billion Laguindigan International Airport last year, next in line are the airports in Iloilo, Puerto Princesa, Kalibo, Davao, Siargao and Dumaguete for this year, CAAP director general Manuel Antonio Tamayo said Tuesday.

“We still have so many airports that we still have to develop and then we will continue with the PPP. It’s a good project. Aside from Bohol-Panglao, next in line will be Iloilo, Puerto Princesa, Kalibo. Davao is in line already as well as Bacolod, Siargao as well and a number of other airports,” Tamayo said.

CAAP plans to build a new airport in Siargao, while land acquisition is ongoing for the Dumaguete airport, he added.

The country has 90 airports, of which 82 are managed and operated by the government.

The rest, including Mactan-Cebu International Airport, Laguindingan Airport, Bohol-Panglao International Airport, Clark International Airport and Ninoy Aquino International Airport, are operated by the private sector.

Meanwhile, CAAP also intends to upgrade three airports into night rated airports this year to address the increasing passenger volume.

“Our target is three more airport night rating — Dipolog, Pagadian and Cauayan Airport in Isabela. Why do we consider these airport to be night rated, because of the volume of traffic, if we see it, it needs to be night rated,” Tamayo said.
