THIRTY-one ports are being considered to cater to offshore wind projects (OSW) in the country, according to the Department of Energy (DOE).

A presentation by DOE assistant secretary Mylene Capongcol ar the third World Clean Energy Conference in Mandaluyong City yesterday showed 15 have secured support.

Of the 15, Capongcol said seven have technical assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), five are proposed to the Economic Development Group (EDG) while three more are supported by the ADB and the EDG.

The DOE identified the 31 ports as Currimao, Irene, Aparri, Hanjin Shipyard, SBMA, Dingalan, Capinpin, Bauan International, Wawa, Batangas, Calatagan, Lucena, Calaca, San Juan, PNOC-ESB, Tabaco, Bulalacao, Legazpi, Caticlan, Lavezares, Culasi, Allen, Dumangas, San Carlos, Iloilo, Cebu International, Banago, Pulupandan, Dumaguete, BREDCO and Dapitan.

Capongcol said as of August 15, 92 OSW contracts have been awarded, equivalent to a capacity of 66.101 gigawatts (GW).

Of the 92 contracts, four were awarded to 100 percent foreign owned companies.

However, all these wind energy service contracts are currently in the pre-development stage, where assessments on resources, site suitability and project viability are being undertaken.

So far, there is a study which identified that the Philippines’ total technical potential for OSW is estimated at 178 GW.
